An Introduction to CBD

Posted by

There’s quite a buzz around the use of CBD these days. The irony is there’s no buzz at all. In fact, the confusion (and sometimes controversy) around using CBD for health and medicinal purposes really only exists when there’s not a true understanding of what exactly CBD is and what it can be used for. To help better explain we asked Janet Schriever, founder of Crave Skincare to give us a lesson about CBD and how and why she uses it in her highly revered and coveted skincare line.

What does CBD stand for?

Cannabidiol (Canna-bi-diol)

What exactly is CBD?

CBD is one of the many Cannabinoids from the Cannabis Sativa Species, which includes both Hemp and Cannabis. One of the most important things to understand is that CBD is non-psychoactive, which means that it does not make your “high" or produce euphoria. CBD is extracted from the Hemp or Cannabis plant and distilled into an oil, sap, resin, or isolated compound.

How can CBD be used?

Because CBD interacts with the Endocannabinoid system in our organs (skin being one of the largest organ) it has many uses. Most commonly, CBD is used topically to condition the skin and relieve pain. It is used internally as a dietary supplement, to help with anxiety, and to relieve aches and pains, as a sleep tonic, and other ailments. CBD is also being used to help animals relieve arthritis and to treat children and adults with epilepsy. In fact, CBD was approved by the FDA as an epilepsy drug just last week. It is truly a versatile compound with many health benefits and if correctly used and prescribed by a knowledgeable doctor, is a wonderful natural medicine.

What are some of the benefits of CBD?

The main benefit of CBD is that it helps with inflammation. So wherever you have inflammation in or on the body, CBD works with your body to soothe it. So many ailments and painful conditions have inflammation at their core. Most people don’t know that CBD has been patented by the US government as an Antioxidant and Neuroprotectant and there are a growing number of scientific studies on what CBD does and how it works with the body.

How (and why?) is CBD used in the Crave skin care products?

I use CBD in my products to calm, soothe, and help relieve skin stress. Stressed-out skin is skin that is out of balance for a number of reasons - a toxic environment, pollution, unprotected sun exposure, using over stimulating or irritating products, and most of all - our psycho-emotional state of mind. All of these issues can cause our skin to prematurely age, break-out, become blotchy and irritated, or just look tired and dull. We don’t live in a perfect world and our skin reflects that. I combine CBD with synergistic vitamins, antioxidants, and beneficial botanicals that work together to bring the skin back to homeostasis, or balance.
